I think the brethren moon have a mind of their own and the markers are relay antennae of sorts. this dormancy field can also be expanded, which happens when isaac puts the marker on the pedestal in the first game. I think they also need a marker signal present to be active and there is a zone around the marker that deactivates them again/keeps them at a certain distance, maybe so the marker doesn't get damaged. Now as far as I know necromorphs do have some kind of mind of their own, but they can also be called by the marker and it seems to me the marker does give them instructions on what to generally do, because you sometimes see necromorphs dragging corpses to a pile, so that bigger necromorph variants can happen. that's why not any corpse just becomes a necromorph, but has to be infected. originally the colony scientists then made this bacteria from instructions written on the marker and 2 of them git infected by it, died and then turned into necromorphs. Shoot its mouth during 2nd phase or throw back the 1st, 3rd, and 5th explosive pods. So what I read was that there is some kind of bacteria, that was on the original black marker, but actually had to be made for the red markers, so they would work. How to Beat: Shoot the sacs of the three tentacles and dodge the thrusts. Classical honey trap, because it's a technology that promises you infinite resources but in reality kills you. I am not 100% certain about this but I have consumed a lot of media regarding dead space and the marker signal itself is just responsible for sending out the plans of how to handle the marker.
